10 more

Got out the door before the heat of the day came knocking. Took it slow and managed to get a good 10 miles in. Even ran 8 100 meter pick-ups in the last mile and half.

  • Summer time 10....nice! What time did you have to get out the door before it starts to steam? And what time do you have to hit the sack to get up that early?

  • Out the door at 7:30. The heating starts before I get back home ,but I get the majority of a 10 miler done before it gets ridiculous. My life-time experience with insomnia has basically made bed-time irrelevant. Being sleep deprived has become just the way it is.Life is good even with all it's imperfections.

  • Ah, I'm sorry to hear about the insomnia, and didn't know it was something you had long term struggles with. I'm sure you've tried it all before, and I'm certainly no expert, however this is such a common issue I know there must be ongoing research which is relevant in this area, particularly non-drug approaches.

    I occasionally listen to a radio show on NPR called "The People's Pharmacy", run by a husband and wife who are both pharmacists. The show brings guest physicians, scientists, and pharmacists to have honest discussions about different drugs, side effects, as well as taking a closer look at home and herbal remedies called in by the audience. Its pretty decent, when I have time to catch it.

    In any case I sometimes go to their website as a starting point for pharmacy related research. Doing a quick search I found two items which may be helpful:

    The first is a study published about a clinical trial which looks successful at treating insomnia without drugs, and may be worth bringing a copy into your physician to discuss: Efficacy of Brief Behavioral Treatment for Chronic Insomnia in Older Adults

    The second reference is a downloadable guide (for $2) for "getting a good night's sleep". People's Pharmacy Guide to A Good Night's Sleep No idea if this is any good but for $2 may be worth checking out.
