Great Start
Opened up the year with a 17:35 5k. Good for 2nd place overall. (Mud won 1st going away). Considering it was 17 degrees at gun time, and there was really no one to race with, I am satisfied with these results.
Ran 25 plus miles today! Ran to Cara's house (27 1/2 miles) . Didn't really have that in mind when I started, but the icy north wind at my back convinced me that continuing in a southwest direction would be a good decision.
I planned on 20 but I figured a good challenge on January 2nd was in order. at the 10 mile mark I ate a banana I had in tow and then stopped in at a convenience store. I asked the guy behind the counter if I could bum a cup of coffee (i assured him I'd pay him later). I guess I looked pathetic enough that he okayed the deal. So after a quick cup of java I hit the 2nd leg of my journey. For the next 12-13 miles it was smooth sailing .
when I got into Tulsa,(3rd and final leg), the crusted snow mounds along the road that had been melting/refreezing over the past week made for very poor footing. With fatigue the legs were having difficulty enough on smooth dry surfaces. The changing footstrikes and varying stride lengths required to traverse the crusted ice ruts really took a toll on my quads. I decided that nearly 2and a half hours of running was enough so I walk/jogged for 3 or 4 miles.I ate some of the peppermint candy cane I had for emergency calorie needs. Finally with-in a mile and a half of Cara's the roadway got much better and I was getting cold so I ran the rest of the way.
